George Weah, president of Liberia announces rape to be a national emergency

The former professional football player and now the President of Liberia George Weah, announced rape to be a national emergency in his country following increase in the occurrence of rape.

The President said; While arranging a new means of handling the problem, He will put in a place a district attorney for rape and also install a national sex criminal registry in his country Liberia .

This declaration was made by the President following a protest by thousands of Liberians due to the increasing occurrence of rape in the capital city Monrovia last month.

George Weah, the only African player to  have ever won a Ballon d'or said his country Liberia are experiencing an outbreak of rape in which the spread is affecting children and young girls the most.

He went further to say; the government will create a body which he called "national security task force" that will focus more on sexual and gender based violence.

According to a report from UN in 2016, about 803 rape incidence were recorded in the previous year and only 2% of sexual violence incidence resulted to a sentence.
