Truck kills lecturer, wife and three children in Benue state


University of Mkar lecturer, Moses Tarnongo his wife and three children were killed in a fatal motor accident in Benue on October 10. The accident occurred at Gbatse community along Ugbema-Adikpo road in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State. It is reported that two other lecturers including University of Mkar lecturer Joshua Leva lost their lives in the accident.

On Sunday, the University Register, Rev. Emmanuel Astor confirmed the death of Moses Tarnong, his wife, three children and another two lecturers. The two lecturers were from the department of Mass Communication. According to the Register, the victims were on a journey to met a cleric when the unfortunate event occurred. Eye witnesses say a trailer truck collided into the stationary Toyota car with registration number MKD-300-NH killing seven occupants.

Witnesses also said that the driver of the truck purchased a fairly used car and was about dodging a police checkpoint when it crashed into the Toyota car.

Joyce Akura, Benue State FRSC Public Enlightenment Officer confirmed the accident along Ugbmea-Adikpo late Saturday. She said two vehicles- a truck with registration number WKR 496 XA and a Toyota car with the registration number MKD-300-NH were affected in the accident. 12 passengers were also involved. Seven have been confirmed dead, one injured and receiving treatment while four where unhurt. She also said the cause of the accident has not be determined. The dead bodies are at a morgue in Ushongo.

Governor of Benue State has sent heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the entire body of the University of Mkar. He urged concerned agencies to investigate the case. He also prayed for the souls of the dead.
