Family locks daughter in a cage for 5 years because they could not afford to pay for her mental illness

A family in the Philippines has caged their 29-year-old daughter who is mentally ill for the period of 5 years because they could not afford her treatment.

In the Sun news 15th of January, 2021, it says that a family claim they had to lock their daughter in a cage for five years as they couldn’t afford to pay for her mental health care.

The woman, 29, had been living with family in the Philippines and dreamt of becoming a professional model before she was diagnosed with psychotic depression in 2014, a family friend said.

The condition meant she suffered from hallucinations and was admitted to a psychiatric unit at a hospital in the Negros Occidental province.

According to the family friend, her condition improved after a year of treatment and doctors allowed her to move home.

But things then apparently took a turn for the worse after the woman’s father became ill in 2015 - meaning the family could no longer afford her medical bills.

The family friend said that, without medication, the woman’s depressive episodes and hallucinations returned.

The pal, who is appealing for help for the woman, said: “Sometimes she would throw things at neighbours, or wander outside the house and start riding the bus.

“There was one time her family was looking for her and found her a week later in Cebu province when the police contacted them.”

To prevent her from escaping, the family built a small cage for her inside the house, it is claimed.

Footage appears to show the woman inside the cell, fiddling with the door and speaking quietly to the person filming her.

The family friend added: “She munches on her dress until they are tattered, so they dress her in sacks because she doesn't like eating them.

“They are locking her up so she won't hurt herself, and not because they don't love her.”

The pal is now appealing for funds to send the woman back to hospital for treatment.
