Kamala Harris: The untold about the new VP of the United States

Many hear Kamala Harris and the first thing that comes to mind is that she is first woman Vice President USA. Born on October 20, 1964 to a Jamaica born Professor of Economics at Stanford, Donald Harris and American Indian breast cancer researcher Dr. Shyamala Gopalan. Donald and Shyamala met as students of the University of California in 1962 and got married 1963. They had two children together Kamala and Maya. The couple later divorced in 1972 after nine years of marriage. Both sisters were raised by Shyamala. Kamala born in California, Kaiser Hospital Oakland, given a native name meaning 'lotus' in Sanskrit by her mother in order to preserve their culture and constant reminder of her roots.

Kamala has been active in political issues right from her toddler years, when she marched or rather rolled in her stroller with her parents protesting for civil rights in Oakland and Berkeley California. In her teenage years marched with sister Maya led a protest to owners of their building in Montreal to reverse the ban of children playing on the lawn. And after due pressure, the children won and the ban was lifted. It didn't end there as Kamala was an active member of Howard University chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha aka Sorority, the first Black Greek Letter Organization for women. Later becoming a Council member of the group. Kamala is a such an avid reader, giving her list of favourite crop of books when asked during her campaign for the presidency in 2019. Books like Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, The lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S Lewis, Native Son by Richard Wright amongst others. This passion for reading probably brought the writer in her as she published her first book in 2009 titled Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor's Plan to Make Us Safer, then in 2019 another book that held most of her values, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey and later that year released her children book, Superheroes Are Everywhere for ages three to seven.

Harris started quite early from college years, to being the district attorney for San Francisco, California in 2004 and then taking over as the attorney general for the entire California in 2011 becoming the first black south Asian Indian American woman to hold the position. Ironically, one of her predecessors is current president Joe Biden. Then serving as a US senator representing California since 2017, being the second woman senator after Hillary Clinton. The post she held even till when she announced that she would run for presidency under the Democratics in 2020 on the 21st of January 2019 but opted out of the race in December 3 2019 after it was obviously causing caucusing and division in the party. She was later nominated as the running partner for Biden in 2020. And they won the race beating Donald Trump and VP Pence in the Summer of 2020. She has been sworn in alongside Biden even with the Ex President Trump skipping the event. She and Biden became friends through Biden's son Beau who later died of Brain cancer. They became friends while they were still in the helm of the California judiciary system.

Harris has been quite outspoken about her views, beginning with her passion for climate change, highlighting how during her investigation on how climate change affected low income communities when she was worked with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. Also her views on the LGBTQ+ Community, she kicked against anti LGBTQ violence. Also denying to defend the Proposition 8, which was later overturned that stated the marriage of only a man and a woman. She later officiated the first same sex marriage in 2013. She was also strongly against Trump's idea of a US border wall with Mexico, stating that the wall won't stop immigrants from coming inside and how the expenses would be excess of the gain. While a district attorney in California, she opened a program that saw into providing jobs for ex convicts including immigrants without papers Harris is also a strong fighter for woman's right stating that even though she is the first woman VP, she won't be that last. Always encouraging women to participate in politics more and congratulated Judge Amy Coney Barrett on her nomination to the Supreme Court. She is also well known for her questioning skills. Able to ask the most daring questions, one of the prominent ones was the grilling of Attorney General Jeff Sessions asking him about his ties with Russians.

Kamala Harris may look so tough on the outside but like most women has a current family background, married to lawyer Doug Emhoff in 2019 and becoming stepmother to his two daughters Ella and Cole. Children that Harris once called ' source of love and pure joy' that her life won't be the same without them. The children and Harris have founded a special relationship that included calling Harris ' Momala' instead of stepmom. Harris is also great influence on her sister's daughter Meena and her children, with pictures and videos of them surfacing showing them have a great time. 2004 to 2010 saw Harris becoming the first woman District Attorney in San Francisco, also the first African American woman and South Asian American to hold the post and after her two terms was selected as the Attorney General of California breaking and setting the same record. So with all this progress by one woman, we could say that Kamala Harris is quite a strong influence and we hope that this increase the participation of women in politics.
