Hoodlums burn newly completed INEC office in Imo State

Unknown gunmen have set fire to the newly completed Independent National Electoral Commission INEC office located at Okwudor community in Njaba Local Government Area in Imo State.

The arson attack was carried out at about 11:30 am on Sunday morning. According to INEC, National Commissioner & Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, the office was built shortly before the commencement of the 2019 General Elections and it was burnt to a considerable degree. He revealed that it was the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Imo state, Francis Ezeonu, that informed them of the burning down of the office in Imo state.

Although no lives were lost, the building was razed down substantially, along with electoral materials, office equipment and also furniture. This incident was subsequently reported to the police for prompt investigation.

This attack came just a week after a similar attack on the INEC office in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area which was vandalised on Sunday, May 23, 2021 bringing the total number of vandalized INEC offices in the state to 8 since the 2019 General Elections.

However, the total number of INEC offices to be vandalized since the 2019 General elections now stands at 42.
