Legalizing cannabis will turn Nigeria into a nation of addicts - NDLEA Boss

Brig. General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Retd), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, has warned that recent steps taken by major stakeholders to push for the legalization of cannabis in Nigeria would undo the gains that has been achieved so far in the war against drug addiction and trafficking in the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at a national security summit organised by the house of representatives, he pointed out that 10.6 million Nigerians are currently abusing cannabis and that figure alone is frightening and enough to sound the warning bells. He also added that drug abuse is a major reason for the security challenges faced across the country.

According to the NDLEA Chairman, he stated that no sane human being would commit all these heinous crimes that we have witnessed in recent years without first hardening his heart with mind-altering substances.
He added that Nigeria should be the last country to legalize cannabis in any way, shape or form and that if it's legalized, the country will turn to a criminal nation full of drug addicts. He then pleaded with lawmakers no to move to legalize cannabis as it would result in Nigeria taking a step backwards in the fight against drug addiction and insecurity.
