Senate to consider proposal on setting up Sharia Courts in Southwest

A group known as the Muslim Congress have submitted a memo to the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, proposing the application of Sharia law in the southwest region of the country.

The Senate commenced its zonal public hearings on constitutional amendments across the nation on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 after soliciting for suggestions from the general public for months.

While presenting their memo at the Lagos hearing on Wednesday, the Muslim Congress stated that it wants the Sharia laws implemented in the Southwest Yoruba speaking parts of the country to cater for its Muslim population.
