EFCC apprehend duo over 55 million naira FAKE charity scam


The duo Michael Yusuf and Martha Daniel Yusuf, both siblings were arrested by the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC]. The duo were arraigned before Justice Hannatu A.L Balogun on an eight count charges bordering on obtaining by false pretence.

One of the charges reads “ that you Michael Yusuf Michael, Martha Daniel Yusuf, Samuel Kabir Daniel [at large], KITE ICT HUB LIMITED, Femi Obasaju [at large] and Ali Felix [at large], at some time between the months of March and July, 2021 in Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with the intent to defraud conspired amongst yourselves to obtain a total sum of N 55,879,379.76 [ Fifty–five Million, Eight Hundred and Seventy Nine Thousand, Three Hundred and Seventy Naira, Seventy-Six Kobo Only] from the general public under the pretence that it was only to be used for the treatment of ailing persons and cancer patients, which pretense you knew to be false and thereby committed on offence contrary to section 8 [a] of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under section 1 [3] of the same Act”.

The persons involved had created an unlicensed and unregistered Medical Non-Governmental Organization [NGO], after which they solicited for funds by posting on Facebook with the page name: MYM123 Care, contact phone No: 08013371515, email address: commedianmym76@gmail.com. With Michael as the head and others playing key roles in the pulling of the scam.

On the 22nd March, 2021, a video of a woman suffering from breast cancer surfaced on the above Facebook page which they used to ask for donations to the account name MYM123care. Thereafter, money running into millions was donated to the account to which the defendants diverted for personal use. The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against them, Counsel M.E Eimonye, the Prosecuting Counsel urged the court to fix a trial date but Counsel Frank Ateregeme of the Defence pleaded for bail for his clients.

The presiding Judge, Justice Balogun refused bail for the 1st defendant[ Michael] on grounds of insufficient materials while he gave Martha bail with surety on grounds that she was pregnant.
