Who is a stay-at-home mom?

A stay-at-home mom (SAHM) is referred to as someone whose work is to stay at home to raise and nurture her children and also to manage her household. In recent times definition, a stay-at-home mom may have left work after childbearing to raise her child(ren). She may be highly educated but for the reason of wanting to raise her children quit her job with plans of returning to work once her children are older.

As easy as it may look to be a stay-at-home mom, there are many things attached to being one. A stay-at-home mom can function as a driver, teacher, chef, nurse, friend, housekeeper, babysitter, etc all rolled into one person. This is the reason why in some places being a stay-at-home mom is considered a job and they are paid.

Here are little advantages and disadvantages of being a stay-at-home mom, also called SAHM;

You're there for your kids

Being at home and around means, you get to spend all the time with your kids which is the main reason why you're a stay-at-home mom. As a stay-at-home mom, one of the advantages is that you're there for your children when they need help and you're always their go-to person for solutions to their problems. And as a result of this, you may feel too stressed because they are always around you and you want some time to yourself. To balance this, you should have clearly stated time to rest and get enough time to yourself, ensure that you keep your mental and physical health with all diligence.

You're mostly never alone

Except for when your kids go to school they are always with you and always around you at every hour of the day because you're available for them. This is an advantage because your kids find it easier to relate to you and you can easily know if something is wrong with them. A disadvantage to this end is that you don't have any alone time, most times you can't even take a nap without them disturbing, you can help yourself by setting boundaries with them or giving them tasks that can keep them occupied while you do things by yourself.

You are still working

Stay at home moms still work just a different kind of work from the normal. You are at an advantage because you don't have to worry about work deadlines or stress in the office, you can focus a hundred percent on your kids and help them grow well. A disadvantage for a person who was working before is missing out on the interaction at work, getting dressed for work, winning contracts, and the feeling of being satisfied after a good job. All you need to do to strike a balance is to connect with other SAHMs and volunteer for some events. You might even pick up a craft and make a living out of it or work on freelance jobs just to fill in for the emptiness of not working at a real company.

You're fully responsible

As a stay-at-home mom, you're spending your time majorly with your children and are fully responsible for all that goes on with them, how they eat, their daily schedule, and the values and academic work they are taught. This can also make you feel isolated from the real world if you keep building yourself around your kids. To balance this you can set dates with other stay-at-home moms and share tips on how efficiently you're doing as moms and look for ways to improve.

You have a different stress level

As easy as it looks to be a stay-at-home mom, it comes with its stress. Your stress level will reduce than if you were working and you still had to raise kids. Children can be more than a handful and you always have to be there to correct them and stop some of their silly habits. If you're feeling stressed you can do some stress relief practice like meditation, aerobic exercise, and so on.

You have a consistent routine

As a stay-at-home mom, you don't have to get worried about an urgent call from your boss or an extended meeting, your time is defined and is spent majorly with family doing the same thing most of the time. This can be a disadvantage because you can be bored by doing the same things over and over again. To balance this up, you can add a variety to your kid's routines like weekly or monthly hangouts, you can also go for picnics at historical places to help them learn more that brings a twist into your schedule.

If you don't know where you can fit it in, look into streamlining your schedule.

These are a few things stay-at-home moms are involved in and being a stay-at-home mom can be fun as you get to experience family time, it's much easier to be one now that there are freelance jobs and moms can also work remotely. Most moms have weighed the effect of the two and as long as children are effectively trained in the right way, there is no issue with which is the best.
