The phrase was initially from a Christian anarchist Writer called Elbert Hubbard in the year 1915, in an obituary he wrote and published for the dwarf actor Marshall Pinckney Wilder, this obituary was titled King of the Jesters and it contains praise for Wilder and his achievements despite his disabilities.
It’s written in the book that:
"He was a walking refutation of that dogmatic statement, Mens Sana in corpore Sano. He was a sound mind in an unsound body. He proved the eternal paradox of things. He cashed in on his disabilities. He picked up the lemons that Fate had sent him and started a lemonade stand."
But although this expression originated from Hubbard, a lot of authors have attributed the phases to Dale Carnegie. He used it in his book "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living”, which was published in 1948. The version in Carnegie’s book reads:
"If You Have a Lemon, Make a Lemonade."
And this has made it popular for challenging situations ever since.
